How do you find balance?
Balance is harder and harder to find in today’s world. At least it is for me. All the way through college, everything is structured. Scheduled time for work, play, and sleep. Balance was sort of forced upon you. And then you get out into the “real world” …
So what happens next?
You experience lots of things as you go through your eduction. Balance starts to go by the wayside. School and career force us to develop a speciality, which is great for getting a job and generating a short-term profit. But what happens when your specialized area goes away? Or something else comes along and makes the specialty irrelevant?
The same goes with fun and savings. So many advertisements tell us to save and save for retirement. But the next commercial urges you to buy a pizza and give someone else your hard earned money. How can you reconcile that difference? You’re damned if you do, and damned if you don’t. Balance goes out the window.
The question of balance is one that has weighed heavily on my mind for quite some time. How many resources do we dedicate to future satisfaction or current enjoyment? Should I finish up this task at work or go home to my wife/kids/girlfriend/dog/cat/friend?
What’s the answer to find balance?
These are hard questions, and I know I don’t have all the answers. But I also know I am not afraid to confront the questions any more. Maybe it’s as simple as stepping outside for a bit on a sunny day. Or taking a walk while the sun sets. You never know what you’re going to see. Maybe that’s how you get a little balance back in your life.
We would like to know, how do you find balance in a world that pulls us in so many directions? What is your centering piece to keep you on the right track? What goals are you focused on?
